Hydraulic presses are types of industrial machinery that originated back in the Industrial Revolution. The invention of the hydraulic press has been credited to Joseph Bramah. The modern-day hydraulic press has come a long way since its invention, in terms of innovation and modernization. Like all other components of hydraulics, a hydraulic press is a machine that is driven by an incompressible liquid such as oil or water. The principle on which the hydraulic press operates is that pressure applied throughout a closed system will be constant. A typical hydraulic press consists of a small piston that is attached to a lever and is connected by tubing to the other end, where a large piston is used.
Modern hydraulic presses are capable of applying pressure that is equal to that of a couple of thousand tons and can even be used to mold metal. Hydraulic presses are used extensively in manufacturing and production processes. The use of hydraulic presses is becoming more and more common and these presses are just as popular as mechanical presses. Their ability to apply uniform pressure has applications in industries ranging from printing serial numbers on bank notes to creating new materials by the process of composition.
A few of the industries that use hydraulic presses are motor manufacturers, automobile manufacturers, jewelers and even food processors.
In the automobile industry hydraulic presses are used to press cores into housings and assemble motor shafts. They are also used for a variety of other tasks such as pressing shafts into water pumps. Jewelers often use hydraulic presses for the making of metal pins. Hydraulic presses are even used in the food industry where they can be used to press frozen foods into various shapes.
Hydraulic presses have some advantages over mechanical presses as they have a quicker processing speed during hand fed tasks. Mechanical presses are quicker in processing automatically fed jobs, but most jobs are hand fed. Another other advantage is the relatively quick setup time of hydraulic presses. This is important as the quick setup of the presses enables for quicker changeovers from one job to another which leads to more productivity. Hydraulic presses generally cost less to purchase and operate and they are quieter and more compact than mechanical presses.
