Check valves, or nonreturn valves, are devices installed in pipelines to stop material in the pipes from flowing in the reverse direction. One of the main materials that check valves control is water, including the water in a supply line. Instead of being activated from the outside, check valves contain a mechanism that mechanically blocks the backflow of water.

Water Supply Lines
Check valves are very useful in water supply lines. Most importantly, they prevent flooding caused by the backflow of the water in the pipes. They also guard the equipment from water damage or corrosion caused by water continuously flowing through the pipes. In addition, they conserve power, because the water is held in place when the water supply is not needed.
Types
There are several different types of check valves that are effective in a water supply line, but they all work in the same basic way. For example, a ball check valve contains a ball-and-spring mechanism. When water flows forward through the supply line, the force of the water pushes against the ball and moves it away from the mouth of the valve, allowing the flow through. When the forward flow stops, the spring pushes the ball back into the mouth of the valve, sealing it shut and preventing the water from flowing backward through the valve.
A swing check valve works similarly, but it uses a small door on hinges instead of a ball. As the water flows through, the door swings back on its hinges to allow for the flow. When the forward flow stops, the door slams shut over the valve's opening, preventing water from flowing backward through it.
Split disk valves use a different mechanism to produce the same effect. They contain a metal disk that folds in half as the water rushes past it. When the flow stops, the disk springs open and plugs up the mouth of the valve.
